1U rack server for density-focused deployments

The Dell PowerEdge R430 fits a single-socket Xeon E5-2603 v3 six-core processor running at 1.6GHz into a 1U chassis. It ships with 48GB of DDR4 memory across twelve DIMM slots and three 1.2TB SAS drives on a PERC H730 RAID controller. Four 1GbE ports and two PCIe 3.0 slots provide baseline connectivity for virtualisation hosts or application nodes.

Upgrade path from older 1U platforms

Replacing a previous-generation rack server with this model adds DDR4 memory channels and a 12Gbps RAID controller while keeping the same 8-bay 2.5-inch hot-plug backplane. The jump is worth it when workloads need faster storage rebuilds or higher memory bandwidth but the rack budget still allows only 1U of height. A second processor can be added later to double core count and memory capacity.

Limits of the SAS backplane

The eight 2.5-inch bays accept SAS or SATA drives but the installed PERC H730 operates at 12Gbps only on SAS media; SATA devices run at their native link speed. With one CPU installed, only six of the twelve DIMM slots are active and maximum memory is capped at 48GB, so full 384GB capacity requires the second processor option. PCIe expansion is restricted to two 3.0 slots.
