Dense 2U storage server

The PowerEdge R740xd packs twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays into a two-socket rack chassis. Dual Xeon Silver 4116 processors provide twenty-four cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo for parallel workloads. 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory fills sixteen slots across twenty-four DIMM positions. The PERC H730P controller manages SAS and SATA arrays with two gigabytes of cache.

Replaces direct-attached arrays

This system consolidates a separate storage appliance and compute nodes into one 2U enclosure. The jump is worth it when virtualisation hosts need local capacity without a SAN. Twenty-four 600 GB 10 K SAS drives deliver raw capacity for software-defined storage or VDI images. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links handles east-west traffic.

Sustained load behaviour

Redundant 1100 W platinum power supplies keep the platform running during a module failure.
