Tower Server for Small-Scale Workloads

The Dell PowerEdge T320 is a tower server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2420 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR3 memory across six DIMM slots and a PERC H710 RAID controller with 512 MB cache. Dual 495 W redundant power supplies and eight hot-plug 3.5-inch drive bays support SATA or SAS drives in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60. A DVD-ROM drive and Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory complete the base configuration.

Suited for File, Print or Light Virtualisation Tasks

This system fits small offices or branch locations that need a quiet tower form factor with redundant power and hardware RAID. It is not for buyers who need a second processor, more than eight drive bays, or memory beyond the 192 GB maximum supported by the platform. The single-socket design limits compute density, and the DDR3 memory generation prevents reuse of newer modules. Teams requiring GPU acceleration or 10 GbE networking will need additional add-in cards.

Memory Ceiling Dictates Upgrade Path

The installed 16 GB of DDR3 can be expanded to 192 GB using the six available DIMM slots, but the memory type cannot be changed. Any future capacity increase must use DDR3 modules up to 32 GB each, and actual speed depends on the processor capability. This constraint makes the memory specification the deciding factor for whether the server can grow with the workload.
