Cellular prototyping module

The Adafruit FONA MiniGSM breakout adds quad-band 2G cellular connectivity to microcontroller projects. It supports voice calls, SMS messaging and GPRS data over TCP/IP or HTTP. A 3-5V microcontroller with a UART is required to send AT commands over the RX/TX pins.

Upgrade from basic connectivity

This module replaces simpler radio or Wi-Fi links when a project must operate on any global GSM network using a standard 2G SIM. The jump is worth it for remote sensors, asset trackers or interactive installations that need voice, text and low-bandwidth data without local infrastructure.

Breadboard-friendly integration

The 1.75"x1.25" PCB mounts on 0.1" headers for easy prototyping. An external LiPo battery of 500mAh or larger, a SIM card and a microphone or headset must be supplied separately. The uFL antenna connector requires a compatible antenna; missing any of these parts is the most common reason a build fails to register on the network.

Preguntas sobre este artículo

What are the board dimensions and mounting-hole spacing for the FONA Mini GSM breakout?

The PCB measures 45 mm by 32 mm and the assembled board with components is 45 mm by 34 mm by 8 mm.

How do I wire the module to a microcontroller and what voltage level should I use?

Connect the RX and TX pins to a 3–5 V microcontroller UART; the module accepts 3–5 V logic and requires a LiPo battery of 500 mAh or larger for power.

Which antenna connector is on this version and what antenna do I need?

This version has a uFL connector; you must attach a compatible uFL GSM antenna for the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz bands.
