The Dell PowerEdge R530 is a 2U rack server built around two six-core Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 processors running at 1.6GHz. It ships with 32GB of DDR4 memory installed across twelve DIMM slots, leaving room for expansion up to the processor limit. Two 600GB 15K SAS drives and a PERC H730 RAID controller provide the initial storage foundation. This configuration suits small business virtualization, file serving or database workloads that need redundant power and hot-plug drive bays.

SAS hot-plug bays and H730 RAID limits

The chassis accepts up to eight 3.5-inch hot-plug SAS or SATA drives, with a maximum raw capacity of 80TB. The H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, but it is a 12Gbps SAS adapter so SATA drives will run at 6Gbps. Memory speed is capped at 2400MT/s and actual throughput depends on the installed Xeon processors. Only five PCIe slots are available, three at 3.0 and two at 2.0, which restrains add-in card density.

Redundant 750W supplies and iDRAC8 management

Dual 750W hot-swap power supplies deliver N+1 redundancy without shutting down the server for a module change. The integrated iDRAC8 Express provides out-of-band remote console, power control and hardware monitoring over a dedicated network port. Four 1GbE ports on the daughter card handle production traffic. A DVD-ROM drive and Matrox G200 video output are included for local install media and basic display. Rails, bezel and power cable are supplied.
