The Dell PowerEdge R640 fits four 3.5-inch drives in a 1U chassis and ships with a single Xeon Gold 5122 running at 3.6GHz. One hundred and twenty-eight gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed. The PERC H740P RAID controller and a dual-port 10GbE 562T adapter are included. This configuration targets workloads that need local capacity and high memory bandwidth in minimal rack space.

Upgrade from Smaller Drive Counts or Lower Memory

Systems limited to two 3.5-inch bays or less than 128GB of RAM will see a direct capacity and bandwidth jump. The chassis supports a second processor when compute demand grows, and maximum memory scales to 7.68TB. The move is worth it when current hardware cannot hold the working dataset or when additional drive bays remove the need for external enclosures.

Slide-In Rails and Cable-Free Drive Carriers

The server mounts on standard rails and the four hot-swap carriers accept 3.5-inch SATA drives without cables. Install drives, seat the rail kit, connect power and network, then configure RAID in the PERC BIOS or iDRAC9 Enterprise. Common issues are forgetting to license iDRAC features after a firmware update and leaving the second CPU socket empty without a terminator.
