Dual 18-core Xeon server for virtualization

The PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 18 cores and a 3.6 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 2133 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots, supporting up to 1.5 TB total. The LGA 2011-3 platform and Intel C610 chipset target midsize and large enterprises running virtual desktop infrastructure, data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, databases and high-performance computing nodes.

PERC H730 controller and quad-port networking

A Dell PERC H730 1 GB mini controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity with battery-backed cache, enabling RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Eight 2.5-inch hot-swap drive trays are populated but no drives are installed, so storage capacity and performance depend entirely on the SATA or SAS disks you add. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for mixed-speed networking. iDRAC 8 Enterprise gives full remote management with virtual console and lifecycle automation.

2U depth limits GPU and tall-card expansion

The 2U rack height restricts add-in cards to low-profile or half-height form factors, ruling out full-height GPUs, FPGA accelerators or additional 10 GbE NICs beyond the onboard quad-port card. Both CPU sockets are already occupied, so no further processor upgrades are possible. Memory scaling beyond 256 GB requires purchasing additional DDR4 RDIMMs or LRDIMMs separately. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies support the current configuration, but high-wattage add-in cards could exceed the available power budget.
