The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around a single ten-core Xeon E5-2650 v3 processor running at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 96 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and includes two 300 GB 15K SAS drives managed by a PERC H730 RAID controller. Dual 750 W hot-swap power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation in dense data-centre racks.

Upgrade from single-socket or older 2U platforms

Moving from a single-socket server or an earlier 2U chassis is justified when workloads need twenty logical threads, hardware RAID across eight 2.5-inch bays, and redundant power in a 3.4-inch height. The jump pays off for virtualization hosts, database nodes, or batch-compute clusters that can use the installed 96 GB ceiling and the controller’s support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 without adding external enclosures.

Limits of the PCIe 3.0 and 12 Gbps SAS interface

The system connects storage through a 12 Gbps SAS controller and expansion through PCIe 3.0 slots, so drive throughput tops out at the controller’s 12 Gbps lane speed and add-in cards are limited to generation 3 signalling. Network options stop at 1 GbE on the standard daughter card, with 10 GbE available only through an optional NDC upgrade. Memory capacity is capped at 96 GB with the current single-processor configuration, and the 24 DIMM slots cannot be populated beyond 12 per installed CPU.
