Eight 3.5-inch drive bays and dual Xeon processors

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack-mount server built for organisations that need dense local storage and strong multi-threaded compute in a single chassis. Eight large-form-factor bays accept 3.5-inch SATA or SAS drives behind a PERC H730 hardware RAID controller. Two Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 processors run at 2.6 GHz with twelve cores each, delivering twenty-four threads for virtualisation hosts, database nodes or backup targets.

Moving from a four-bay tower

Upgrading from a smaller tower server or a single-socket 1U rack system adds both drive capacity and CPU threads in one step. The jump is worthwhile when workloads outgrow four drive slots or when a single processor can no longer keep virtual machines responsive. The second socket and extra bays remove those bottlenecks without requiring a second physical server.

768 GB DDR4 ECC registered memory at the platform

The system ships with 768 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory, which is the maximum the R730 supports. This capacity comfortably runs dozens of virtual machines, large in-memory databases or heavy Java application stacks. Headroom ends at the installed limit; any further memory expansion would require a newer platform.
