PowerEdge R730 8-bay server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server with eight 3.5-inch drive bays, one Xeon E5-2620 v4 processor at 2.1GHz and 256GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. It ships with a PERC H730 SAS controller, dual 495W power supplies and an Intel network card providing two 10GbE and two 1GbE ports. The iDRAC8 Enterprise licence enables full remote management.

Upgrade from single-socket or smaller chassis

Adding a second Xeon E5-2620 v4 doubles core count and raises maximum memory to 768GB, which benefits virtualisation hosts and database workloads. The eight-bay chassis replaces four-bay or 2.5-inch configurations when more raw capacity or larger drives are required. The jump is worth it when current memory or drive slots are exhausted and the workload scales across additional cores.

Build integration: power, networking and expansion

The server needs a rack with at least 36 inches of depth and a PDU able to supply two 495W units. The PERC H730 handles SAS or SATA drives in any RAID level, freeing the internal bays for bulk storage. Dual 10GbE ports connect directly to top-of-rack switches without extra NICs, while iDRAC8 gives out-of-band console access over a dedicated management network.
