The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a new 2U rack-mount server system built for data-centre workloads that need high core counts and large memory capacity. It arrives with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each delivering 16 cores at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo, giving 32 cores total. The platform targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and compute clusters that demand balanced CPU and storage performance.

256 GB registered ECC DDR4 across 24 slots

The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory installed in eight 32 GB modules, leaving 16 DIMM slots free for expansion up to the 3 TB platform maximum. This memory configuration decides whether the server can hold your working set without swapping; buyers needing more capacity must add compatible DDR4 RDIMMs. The LGA 3647 socket and Intel C620 chipset limit upgrades to the same processor generation.

PERC H730P, quad-port networking

The included PERC H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through for the eight 800 GB SATA SSDs already installed in the 2.5-inch bays. A Dell Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible network topology. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides full remote management with virtual console and lifecycle automation, while redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and sliding rails simplify deployment.
