The PowerEdge R740xd fits two Xeon Gold 6130 processors and 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory into a 2U rack chassis. Twenty-four drive bays and a PERC H730P controller give software-defined storage clusters and virtual desktop infrastructure room to scale. Dual 1100 W platinum supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise keep the platform manageable at density.

SATA and SAS limited to 12 Gb/s controller speed

The H730P tops out at 12 Gb/s per SAS lane, so flash drives faster than that will be bottlenecked. Ten-gigabit SFP+ ports on the X520/I350 daughter card cap east-west traffic at 10 Gb/s per port. The LGA 3647 socket and C620 chipset restrict upgrades to the same Scalable processor family.

Replaces 1U or tower servers that hit drive-bay

When a 1U node runs out of 2.5-inch bays or a tower chassis cannot hold 24 DIMMs, this 2U form factor adds capacity without a larger rack footprint.
