The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rackmount chassis. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 processors deliver twenty-four cores each at 2.4 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo. Two hundred fifty-six gigabytes of DDR4-2933 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P controller with two gigabytes of cache support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Upgrade from direct-attached arrays

This server replaces sprawling JBOD enclosures and older 2U platforms that max out at twelve or sixteen bays. The jump is worth it when a single rack unit must serve both compute and two hundred eight terabytes of raw capacity. Dual 1100 watt platinum supplies and hot-swap power keep the array online during maintenance.

Fits dense rack rows

The chassis accepts up to sixteen DDR4 modules and two processors, so memory and CPU headroom remain after the factory configuration. An OCP 2.0 mezzanine card adds dual-port 10/25 Gb SFP28 connectivity alongside the onboard dual-port 1 GbE LOM. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote firmware updates and power cycling without a separate KVM.
