The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz and 3.7 GHz turbo. With 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 modules, it targets databases, virtualization clusters and analytics that demand high core counts and large memory capacity in a 3U rack form factor.

SAS storage and networking limits

Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives connect through a PERC H730P controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA links, but the chassis only accepts 2.5-inch drives. Networking uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections; no additional onboard ports are present.

Rail mounting and memory population

ReadyRails slide into standard four-post racks and the bezel snaps on the front. All 48 DIMM slots are wired, yet only 16 are filled, so expanding memory requires matching registered ECC DDR4 modules. The dual 1600 W platinum power supplies are hot-swappable, but the system draws significant current, so verify circuit capacity before powering on.
