Scalable USB 3.0 connectivity

The StarTech PEXUSB3S7 adds seven USB 3.0 ports to a desktop through a single PCI Express slot. Six external Type-A connectors and one internal port serve users who need many simultaneous SuperSpeed devices. A SATA power plug supplies the extra current required for high-draw peripherals. The card fits standard and low-profile chassis with the included bracket.

Bandwidth and device limits

Each port delivers up to 5.0 Gbps shared across the Renesas µPD720201 and µPD720210 controllers. Seven ports provide ample headroom for multiple external drives, docks or cameras, though total throughput cannot exceed the PCIe 2.0 lane bandwidth. UASP support improves bulk-endpoint efficiency on compatible storage. The single SATA power connector caps auxiliary current at the drive-specification limit.

Build integration

The half-height board measures 4.70 by 4.10 inches and installs in any open PCIe x1 or larger slot. Native driver support in Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Server 2012 and 2008 R2 plus Linux kernel 2.6.31 or later removes the need for manual driver hunts. Backward compatibility keeps USB 2.0 and 1.x gear functional. Systems without a free SATA power lead or an available PCIe slot cannot use this card.
