Dense blade compute for virtualization

The PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 registered ECC memory is installed across two slots, leaving fourteen slots open for expansion up to the platform maximum. Two 1.92 TB SATA SSDs connect through the integrated PERC S140 controller with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 support. A Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb blade network daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise provide connectivity and remote management.

Fits dense virtualization and HPC clusters

This configuration suits teams deploying virtualized workloads, private clouds or high-performance computing in a shared chassis where blade density and 10 Gb networking are priorities. The sixteen gigabytes of memory and single S140 controller limit database instances or memory-heavy applications that need larger footprints or dedicated NVMe RAID. Buyers who need GPU acceleration, Fibre Channel connectivity or an operating system pre-loaded should look at a different platform.

Slots into MX or M1000e chassis ecosystems

The blade requires a compatible PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure for power, cooling and fabric interconnects. Two processor sockets are fully populated, so no further CPU upgrades are possible without replacing the existing 8160s. Memory can scale to 1.5 TB using the fourteen vacant DDR4 slots. The S140 controller manages the installed SATA SSDs and can attach additional SATA or NVMe drives in the two 2.5-inch bays. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables out-of-band firmware updates and monitoring without consuming host resources.
