The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server fitted with two Xeon Gold 6154 processors. Each CPU provides 18 cores at 3.0 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The unit ships with 16 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across two modules. It is built for virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads in space-constrained data centres.

Fits MX or M1000e chassis with shared infrastructure

The blade slides into a PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure, drawing power, cooling and fabric connectivity from the shared mid-plane. Onboard the S140 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for up to two 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives in the supplied caddies. A Broadcom 57810S-K daughter card delivers dual-port 10 Gb Ethernet, while iDRAC9 Enterprise gives full out-of-band management without extra licensing.

Replaces older half-height blades when core

The 36 combined cores and 2 TB maximum memory capacity let you consolidate more virtual machines per slot than earlier two-socket blades. The step up is justified when workloads need the 2666 MHz DDR4 bandwidth or the integrated NVMe support on the S140 controller.
