High-density blade server for virtualization

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for modern data centres. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors, each offering 20 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules, leaving twelve of sixteen slots free for expansion up to 1.5 TB total capacity. It fits PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis for scalable deployment.

Storage and network limits of the blade form factor

Internal storage uses a PERC H330 controller supporting SAS and SATA drives in two 2.5-inch bays with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50. The controller runs at 12 Gb/s but the blade design restricts drive count to two devices. Network connectivity comes from a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card, providing high-throughput links within the chassis fabric. NVMe drives are supported by the platform but require compatible backplanes not included here.

Blade installation depends on chassis compatibility

Installing the M640 requires a supported PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure with available half-height slots and matching midplane connectors. The server arrives without front bezel or ready rails, so those must be sourced separately for the target chassis. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote management once networked, but initial configuration needs chassis-level access. Memory and processor upgrades follow standard blade procedures, though maximum CPU count is already reached at two sockets. No operating system is pre-installed.
