The PowerEdge R740xd is a two-socket 2U rack server built for storage-heavy workloads such as software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure or service-provider hosting. It ships with two Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and 24 front-accessible 2.5-inch drive bays populated with 300 GB 10K SAS hard drives.

Verify rack space, power and networking

Confirm that your rack can accommodate a 2U chassis with the included ready rails and front bezel. The server requires two 1100 W redundant hot-swap power supplies, so ensure your PDU or circuit can deliver the necessary current. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports; check that your switch supports SFP+ transceivers and cabling. The PERC H730P controller handles SAS and SATA drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode.

Dual 1100 W supplies manage thermals

Redundant 1100 W platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and keep the system running if one unit fails. In normal operation the dual-processor configuration and 24 spinning drives draw significant power, so the chassis fans will ramp to maintain safe temperatures, producing audible airflow noise typical of dense 2U platforms. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module provides remote thermal monitoring and alerting without requiring physical access to the server.
