The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server equipped with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots and includes two 1 TB 7.2K SAS drives managed by a Smart Array P440 controller with 4 GB FBWC. Dual 500 W hot-swap power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation in data centre environments.

Sustained load behaviour

The P440 controller's 4 GB flash-backed write cache absorbs write bursts and protects in-flight data during power loss, allowing consistent throughput under prolonged I/O workloads. Redundant 500 W power supplies maintain uptime if one unit fails, while the 16-bay SFF chassis supports additional drives to scale capacity without reducing airflow. The installed Xeon delivers 24 threads via hyper-threading for parallel task execution.

Practical limits of the SAS 6 Gbps interface

Each 1 TB drive operates at 6 Gbps SAS, capping sequential throughput at the interface speed rather than the controller's 12 Gbps capability. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are supported, but usable capacity and rebuild times grow with array size. Memory tops out at 32 GB with one processor; a second CPU is required to reach the platform maximum of 3 TB across all 24 slots.
