HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2U server

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads. It ships with dual Xeon E5-2630 v3 processors, each delivering eight cores at 2.4 GHz. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed across the 24 DIMM slots. The platform targets virtualisation, database and general compute tasks that demand dual-socket density in a compact form factor.

Upgrading from single-socket

Moving from a single-processor server doubles the core count to 16 physical cores and 32 threads with hyper-threading. The jump is worth it when workloads saturate a single socket or when memory capacity must exceed single-processor limits. The C610 chipset and 24 DIMM slots support up to 3 TB of DDR4, so the platform grows with the application. Buyers who need more than two processors or who require a newer instruction set should look elsewhere.

Integrating into a rack build

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch SFF drive bays populated with two 600 GB 15 K SAS drives. The Smart HBA H240ar controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SAS and SATA media. Two redundant 500 W hot-swap power supplies free the builder from single-point power concerns. Expansion options include a universal media bay, NVMe drive cages or additional SFF backplanes in the remaining bays. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics chip covers basic video output for management consoles.
