Ready for rack deployment

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads. It ships with a single Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4GHz and 96GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots. Dual 500W hot-swap power supplies provide redundancy from day one.

Upgrade from single-socket limits

The platform supports a second processor to reach 36 total cores and 3TB of memory when the installed 96GB ceiling becomes a bottleneck. Adding the second CPU also unlocks the remaining 12 DIMM slots and the extra PCIe lanes needed for additional drive cages or NVME options.

SAS throughput and bay constraints

The Smart HBA H240ar delivers 12Gb SAS and 6Gb SATA connectivity with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The eight 2.5-inch bays are filled by two 1TB 7.2K SAS drives; further expansion requires the universal media bay or extra SFF cages which occupy specific bay positions.

Questions sur cet article

How much clearance does the 2U rack chassis need in a standard cabinet?

The 2U height occupies two rack units; allow space for front-to-back airflow and cable routing at the rear.

What is the correct order for seating the H240ar controller and SAS cables during installation?

Install the H240ar into its dedicated internal slot first, then connect the SAS cables to the backplane before powering on.

When should the 7.2K 2.5-inch SAS drives be replaced in a RAID 5 array?

Replace a drive immediately when the controller flags a predictive failure or the array enters a degraded state.
