The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for high-density compute clusters and virtualised workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6248 processors running at 2.5 GHz, 256 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory, and a PERC H330 SAS storage controller managing two 4 TB SATA 2.5-inch hard drives. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise with a 10 GbE dual-port network adapter included.

Organisations running large-scale virtualisation, HPC or container platforms will benefit from the 40 combined cores and the 1 TB maximum memory capacity across two sockets. Buyers who need more than two 2.5-inch drive bays, a larger local storage footprint, or GPU acceleration should look at a different form factor because the blade chassis limits internal expansion to the installed drives and integrated graphics.

Two-socket limit caps scaling at 40 cores and 1 TB

The M640 chassis supports a maximum of two processors, so the installed Xeon Gold 6248 pair already reaches the platform ceiling of 20 cores per socket and 27.5 MB cache per CPU. Memory can still be expanded to 1 TB using the remaining DDR4 slots, but CPU growth stops at the two sockets provided.
