The Dell PowerEdge R430 fits a single Intel Xeon E5-2603v3 six-core processor running at 1.6GHz into a 1U rack chassis with redundant hot-swap power. It ships with 24GB of DDR4 memory across twelve DIMM slots and three 300GB 15K SAS drives managed by a PERC H330 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. Four 1GbE ports and two PCIe 3.0 slots provide baseline connectivity for departmental workloads.

Scale-up from tower or older 2U gear

This server replaces a tower workstation or an earlier 2U rack unit when rack density, redundant power and hot-plug drive bays become requirements. The jump is worth it when the application fits within 24GB of memory and can use the eight 2.5-inch bays for SAS or SATA storage, while the single-socket configuration keeps licensing costs lower than a dual-socket alternative.

DDR4 ceiling and SAS throughput limits

The platform caps installed memory at 24GB despite twelve slots, so larger datasets need a different chassis. The H330 controller operates at 12Gbps SAS but the supplied drives run at 6Gbps, limiting sustained throughput to the drive speed. Two PCIe 3.0 slots restrict high-bandwidth add-in cards, and the four 1GbE ports cannot be aggregated beyond 1Gbps per link without a faster NIC.
