Compact 1U rack server for dense deployments

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rackmount server built for data centre environments where space is at a premium. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.3GHz with a 3.2GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 12 cores, giving 24 cores total for virtualization, cloud and database workloads. The system includes 32GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across four modules.

Upgrade from single-socket or lower-core systems

Moving to this dual-socket configuration adds a second Xeon Gold 5118 and doubles the core count from 12 to 24, which benefits heavily threaded applications and larger virtual machine densities. The PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through, replacing basic onboard SATA controllers that lack hardware RAID and battery-backed cache. Eight 960GB SATA SSDs provide high-capacity flash storage in the 2.5-inch drive bays, a step up from smaller or mechanical drive sets.

Limited by 1GbE networking and single-slot expansion

The integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet adapter caps network throughput at 1Gbps per port, which can bottleneck storage replication or high-density virtualization traffic. A single low-profile PCIe slot is available for add-in cards, restricting the ability to add 10GbE, Fibre Channel or additional storage controllers simultaneously. The 550W platinum power supplies deliver redundancy but limit total headroom for power-hungry expansion cards or future processor upgrades. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.
