Compact rack server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R630 fits a single Intel Xeon E5-2620 V3 six-core processor at 2.4 GHz with 16 GB of DDR4 memory into a 1U chassis. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives managed by a Perc H730 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and a four-port 1 GbE daughter card complete the baseline configuration.

Upgrade path from limited memory

The system board provides 24 DIMM slots and supports up to 1536 GB of DDR4 when a second processor is added. Moving from a single-CPU, 16 GB starting point to a dual-CPU, high-capacity configuration is worthwhile when workloads exceed the current memory ceiling or require more than six physical cores. The H730 controller and PCIe 3.0 slots remain unchanged, so storage and expansion investments carry forward.

Suits virtualisation hosts

Organisations running hypervisors or memory-intensive databases in constrained rack space benefit from the 1U form factor and large memory headroom. Buyers who need more storage bays than eight 2.5-inch drives, or who require 10 GbE networking without adding a daughter card, should evaluate larger chassis options. The Matrox G200 graphics and lack of an optical drive also limit use as a graphical workstation or media server.
