The Dell PowerEdge R640 10B is a 1U rackmount server built for high-density virtualisation, database and file-storage workloads. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.1GHz, supported by 128GB of DDR4 memory. Ten 2.5-inch bays are filled with new 1TB SATA SSDs. Integrated graphics and dual embedded network controllers handle display and connectivity.

Suited for consolidation, not GPU compute

IT teams consolidating multiple virtual machines, hosting business applications or running backup repositories will find the core count and memory capacity fit those tasks. The integrated GPU and lack of full-height PCIe slots mean the chassis cannot accommodate discrete accelerators or high-throughput network cards, so buyers who need GPU-accelerated workloads or additional expansion should look elsewhere.

10-bay 2.5-inch storage layout

The defining specification is the front bay count: ten 2.5-inch drive bays populated with 1TB SATA SSDs. This density sets the raw storage available for operating systems, virtual machines and data before any external array is added. Memory can scale to 3TB DDR4 across the two LGA3647 sockets, but the bay count is fixed by the 10B chassis.
