Dense 1U dual-socket compute node

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out workloads that demand high core counts in minimal rack space. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors deliver 16 cores each at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo, while 256 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory fills eight of the 24 available slots. The PERC H730P controller manages eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Upgrade from single-socket or older 2U platforms

Moving from a single-socket server doubles thread capacity and memory channels, cutting virtualization host count or database licensing sockets. Replacing a 2U dual-socket system recovers half the rack height while keeping the same maximum of two processors and 3 TB memory ceiling. The jump is worth it when density per rack unit outweighs the loss of PCIe slot count and internal drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch SAS bays provided.

Limited by 12 Gb/s SAS backplane

The storage controller and backplane operate at 12 Gb/s SAS, so drive throughput caps at that interface speed regardless of newer media capabilities. The 1U form factor restricts airflow, limiting sustained turbo frequencies under heavy all-core loads compared to taller chassis with larger heatsinks. Network connectivity is fixed to the installed X520/I350 daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports; no additional mezzanine cards fit.
