The Dell PowerEdge R640 packs two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors into a single rack unit, delivering 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. It targets organisations that need high compute density for virtualisation, database or scale-out workloads without expanding rack footprint.

Memory headroom and storage flexibility

Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC memory occupy four of twenty-four slots, leaving ample room for future expansion up to three terabytes. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across eight 2.5-inch drive bays, which currently hold eight 800 GB SATA SSDs. A quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 GbE SFP+ connections for varied network topologies.

Redundant power and remote management

Dual 750 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies operate in hot-swap redundant mode, maintaining uptime during a supply failure. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables out-of-band monitoring, firmware updates and virtual console access without requiring the host operating system to be running. The server is suited to cooled rack environments; it is not designed for office or desktop deployment where acoustic and airflow requirements differ.
