Dense dual-socket compute

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out data centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each offering 16 cores at 2.6 GHz, and 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four modules. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages storage, while dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy. Quad-port networking combines two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links, and iDRAC9 Enterprise enables full remote management.

Suited for virtualisation and database clusters

This configuration fits environments that need high core density in a single rack unit, such as virtualisation hosts, in-memory databases or HPC nodes. The 16-core CPUs and 64 GB baseline memory support heavy multi-threaded tasks, and the eight 2.5-inch bays allow further SSD expansion. Buyers who need more than two sockets, GPU acceleration or larger installed memory out of the box should evaluate alternative platforms. The fixed 1U height also limits PCIe add-in cards to low-profile form factors.

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays with SATA SSDs

The chassis provides eight hot-swap 2.5-inch bays, currently populated with two 800 GB SATA solid-state drives. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, plus pass-through mode, giving flexibility for performance or redundancy. Additional drives must use the SATA or SAS interface supported by the backplane and controller. Maximum system memory reaches 3 TB across 24 DDR4 slots when fully populated.
