Purpose-built rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mount system designed for organisations that need dense compute in a standard cabinet. A single Intel Xeon 5217 processor running at 3GHz with eight cores and 11 MB cache delivers the processing foundation. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed, with headroom to expand towards a 7.68 TB maximum capacity. The configuration targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes or high-performance workloads that benefit from a balanced core count and large memory ceiling.

Chassis, storage and management

The 4LFF chassis accepts up to four 3.5-inch SATA drives, though none are fitted in this build. A PERC H740P RAID controller manages the storage array and supports multiple RAID levels for data protection. Network connectivity is provided by a dual-port 10 GbE 562T adapter, enabling fast east-west traffic or storage links. Remote administration comes via iDRAC9 with an Enterprise licence, allowing full out-of-band control, monitoring and firmware updates without physical access. Two 750 W power supplies share the load for redundancy.

Thermals and power in normal use

Dual redundant power supplies and the 1U form factor rely on high-speed internal fans to move air across the processor, memory and drive bays. Under typical workloads the system draws a fraction of the 750 W capacity per supply, leaving ample headroom for peak demand. Fan speed ramps with inlet temperature and component load, so acoustics rise during sustained heavy compute but remain within data-centre norms. The efficient airflow design keeps the Xeon 5217 and DDR4 modules within thermal limits without throttling in standard rack environments.
