Dense 1U compute platform

The Dell PowerEdge R650 packs two Intel Xeon Gold 6338 processors, each with 32 cores running at 2.0 GHz and a 3.2 GHz turbo, into a single rack unit. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory arranged as eight 16 GB modules. Ten 600 GB 10K SAS drives connect through a PERC H755 controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with 8 GB of non-volatile cache. Dual 1400 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise management complete the package.

Virtualisation hosts and database nodes

This configuration suits teams that need high core counts and fast local storage in minimal rack space, such as hypervisor clusters or transactional databases. The 1U height and 10-bay 2.5-inch chassis leave no room for additional internal drives or full-height PCIe cards, so buyers who require more storage bays or extra accelerator slots should look at larger form-factor servers. Workloads that depend on GPU acceleration or persistent memory modules will not be supported by this build.

PERC H755 cache and quad 1 GbE OCP card

The RAID controller's 8 GB battery-backed cache accelerates write-heavy workloads and protects data during power loss. The Broadcom 5720 OCP 3.0 adapter adds four 1 GbE ports for management or storage traffic without consuming a PCIe slot. Included sliding rails and a front bezel simplify rack installation and physical security. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote firmware updates, power cycling and console access over a dedicated network interface.
