The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack-mount server system built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory installed across 24 available DIMM slots and includes a Dell PERC H730 RAID controller with 1 GB cache. Two 300 GB 15K SAS drives occupy two of the eight hot-plug 3.5-inch drive bays, and dual 750 W redundant power supplies provide failover capability. The platform also includes a DVD-ROM drive, four 1 GbE network ports, and iDRAC8 remote management.

Suited for legacy workloads

This configuration fits environments that need a dense 2U chassis with hardware RAID and high-speed SAS spindles for databases, virtualization hosts, or backup repositories. The single-socket layout and 16 GB base memory limit immediate compute density, so buyers who need dual-processor performance or larger memory footprints from day one should look elsewhere. The included PERC H730 supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, but the system arrives without an operating system, requiring separate provisioning.

The installed CPU delivers six cores at a fixed 1.9 GHz clock speed with no Turbo Boost capability, which determines the baseline throughput for all workloads on this node. A second processor socket is available for future expansion, but the shipping configuration provides only one. Memory runs as DDR4 at speeds up to 2400 MT/s depending on the processor, and the H730 controller connects via a dedicated PCIe 3.0 slot leaving up to seven additional PCIe 3.0 slots for add-in cards.
