Purpose-built 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server equipped with dual Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 eight-core processors running at 2.4GHz. It ships with 16GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and eight 300GB 15K SAS drives managed by a PERC H730 RAID controller supporting levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant 750W hot-swap power supplies and a DVD-ROM drive complete the configuration for immediate deployment in a datacentre rack.

Upgrade path from limited capacity

This system replaces an older rack server that cannot accommodate more than 16GB of memory or lacks 12Gbps SAS RAID performance. The jump is worth it when workloads demand 32 virtual cores via hyper-threading, up to 64TB of raw SAS storage across eight hot-plug 2.5-inch bays, and seven PCIe 3.0 expansion slots plus a dedicated PERC slot. The iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller adds remote management that legacy platforms often miss.

Suits virtualisation hosts, not GPU farms

The R730 suits organisations building virtualisation clusters, database nodes or internal cloud infrastructure that rely on CPU cores and fast SAS storage rather than accelerator cards. Buyers who need more storage than eight 2.5-inch bays provide, or who require 10GbE networking beyond the standard four 1GbE ports, should look at a different chassis. The 16GB memory ceiling also rules out large in-memory workloads without additional DIMMs.
