The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives in a 2U chassis. A single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 with ten cores at 2.3 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 memory handles compute. The PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies keep the system running.
Moving from a tower or a server with fewer drive bays adds capacity without extra rack units. The jump is worth it when you need twelve SAS or SATA drives and hardware RAID in 2U. The installed three 300 GB 15K SAS drives give a fast starting array. A second processor can be added later for heavier multi-threaded loads.
The platform uses PCIe 3.0 slots and the included daughter card provides four 1 GbE ports. Faster 10 GbE requires an optional NDC upgrade. Memory speed reaches 2400 MT/s only with processors that support it. Maximum installed memory is 16 GB per the specification table, though the chipset can address more with additional modules.

Same family, different memory, cooler or clock — compare before you commit.
The chassis measures 26.8 inches long by 17.44 inches wide, so a standard 4-post rack with adjustable rails at least 26.8 inches deep will accommodate it.
The 12 x 3.5-inch bays use Dell 3.5-inch hot-plug trays; trays are included only with drives purchased from the supplier, so order trays separately for third-party drives.
Replace a supply when the iDRAC8 alerts show a fault or the front-panel amber LED lights; the redundant design lets you swap one unit while the server stays running.
