The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives as a 2U rack server populated with two Xeon Platinum 8268 processors running at 2.9 GHz and 384 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. It targets organisations that need dense compute and large memory capacity for virtualisation, databases or high-performance workloads. The chassis supports up to eight 3.5-inch drive bays and includes a PERC H730P RAID controller and a dual-port 10 GbE 562T adapter.

Processor specification

The decisive specification is the dual-socket Xeon Platinum 8268 configuration delivering 24 cores per processor at a base frequency of 2.9 GHz with 35.75 MB cache each. Buyers who require a different core count, clock speed or single-socket layout should select another model. Thermals and power

Two 750 W power supplies provide redundancy for the dual-processor, memory-heavy configuration under typical loads.
