The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack system fitted with two Intel Gold 6126 CPUs running at 2.6 GHz. Each processor provides 12 cores and 19.25 MB of cache. The platform ships with 32 GB of DDR4 memory installed as two 16 GB PC4-2666 modules.

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays populated with 300 GB 10K SAS disks and an H730P RAID controller give fast local storage for databases or virtual machines. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots and an Intel X550 network daughter card with two 10 Gb RJ45 ports support high-throughput I/O. Buyers needing GPU acceleration should look elsewhere because the chassis has no provision for full-length double-width cards.

The installed 32 GB may suffice for light consolidation but falls short for memory-intensive databases or large VDI deployments.
