The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built around twelve 3.5-inch drive bays. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors supply 20 cores each at 2.4 GHz, reaching 3.7 GHz under turbo. One hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of DDR4 registered ECC memory populate eight of twenty-four slots. The configuration targets workloads that prioritise raw capacity and multi-threaded throughput.

Controller and networking foundation

A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the twelve 4 TB 7.2 K SATA drives through RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 or pass-through. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for storage or cluster traffic.
