The PowerEdge R740xd fits two 24-core Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo ceiling into a 2U rack chassis. Seventy-six-eight gigabytes of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory fill all 24 DIMM slots, giving virtualisation hosts or database nodes a wide memory footprint without leaving room for further expansion. The platform targets software-defined storage clusters, service-provider workloads and virtual desktop infrastructure where core count and memory capacity matter more than single-thread speed.

Sustained throughput with hardware RAID offload

The PERC H730P controller presents 24 enterprise 800 GB SATA SSDs through a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface with a 2 GB write-back cache backed by a battery. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are supported alongside pass-through mode, so parity rebuilds and scrub operations run in hardware without stealing CPU cycles during prolonged write-heavy phases. Dual 10 Gb SFP+ and dual 1 GbE ports on the X520/I350 daughter card keep storage replication and client traffic on separate physical links when the cluster is under continuous load.

Redundant platinum power and remote firmware control

Two hot-swap 1100 W platinum-efficiency supplies share the load so a single failure leaves the system running without throttling. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module provides out-of-band console redirection, power cycling and firmware updates over a dedicated management network, allowing administrators to diagnose thermal events or replace a drive without visiting the rack. Front bezel and ready rails are included for standard cabinet mounting.
