Dense storage server for virtualisation

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack system built around two Xeon Platinum 8160 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores each. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules and twenty-four 400 GB SATA solid-state drives. The platform targets software-defined storage clusters, service-provider workloads and virtual desktop infrastructure deployments.

Twelve-gigabit controller frees drive bays

A PERC H730P RAID controller with 2 GB cache manages the twenty-four 2.5-inch bays over twelve-gigabit SAS and SATA links, supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through. Two CPU sockets are already populated at the maximum of two, leaving no room for processor upgrades. Twenty-four DIMM slots hold the installed 128 GB and can scale toward a 3 TB ceiling when the remaining sixteen slots are filled. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for network connectivity.

Redundant platinum supplies handle peak draw

Dual hot-swap 1100 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and maintain uptime if one unit fails. The 2U chassis uses forced-air cooling calibrated for the Xeon Platinum 8160 thermal profile at its 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band monitoring of temperatures, fan speeds and power consumption without requiring the host operating system to be running.
