The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays into a two-rack-unit chassis for workloads that prioritise raw capacity. Dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver twenty-four cores each at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo ceiling. One hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory fills eight of the sixteen available slots. The PERC H330 controller manages the installed SATA drives.

Sustained throughput for archive workloads

Twenty-six enterprise 8 TB hard drives spinning at 7.2 K RPM feed the H330 controller across twelve-gigabit SAS/SATA lanes, keeping sequential bandwidth steady during long backup or ingest jobs. Dual 1100 watt platinum power supplies share the load so neither unit runs near its thermal limit. The 1GbE LOM and dual-port 25 GbE mezzanine card (57414) prevent network saturation when multiple streams write concurrently. Turbo clocks hold under multi-threaded pressure because the 2U airflow path feeds both sockets continuously.

Serviceable density with remote control

Hot-swap drive carriers and redundant power supplies let technicians replace failed media or a PSU without shutting the rack down. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band console access, firmware updates and hardware health telemetry over a dedicated management port. The OCP 2.0 mezzanine slot and standard PCIe risers remain open for additional NICs or HBAs. Front bezel and ready rails are not included, so plan mounting hardware separately.
