Dual Silver 4210R 1U rack server

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 fits in a single rack unit and runs two Intel Silver 4210R processors at 2.4GHz with ten cores each. It ships with 256GB of DDR4 memory across sixteen 16GB modules running at 2666MT/s. Two 1.92TB SAS RI SSDs and an H730P RAID controller provide the initial storage foundation. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Upgrading from single-socket

Moving from a single-processor server doubles the core count to twenty and adds a second memory controller, which helps workloads that scale across sockets such as virtualisation hosts or database nodes. The jump is worthwhile when your current box hits memory capacity limits or when licensing costs favour fewer, denser nodes. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays leave room to grow the array well beyond the two installed SSDs.

Build considerations for dense compute

The 1U chassis demands front-to-rear airflow and a rack with adequate depth for the included rails. Redundant 1100W supplies keep the system running if one unit fails. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional network adapters, GPU accelerators or storage controllers. The integrated Intel X550 delivers two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports without consuming a slot.
