Converged 5U rack platform

The Dell VRTX fits two M630 blades into a 5U chassis with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays. Each blade carries an Intel E5-2630v4 processor running at 2.2 GHz with ten cores and 25 MB cache. The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4 memory across sixteen 16 GB modules and twelve 20 TB 7.2 K SAS drives. A single CMC, a PERC8 RAID controller and an S130 storage controller manage compute and storage resources. An internal 1 GB switch module connects the blades to the network while dual-port Intel X520 adapters provide 10 Gb uplinks.

Redundant 1600 W power and cooling

Four hot-plug 1600 W power supplies deliver N+N redundancy for the entire enclosure. Shared cooling fans serve both blades and the drive bay area, reducing the number of moving parts compared with separate rack servers. The consolidated airflow design keeps component temperatures within specification while maintaining acoustic levels suitable for a standard data-centre aisle. Power draw scales with the two blades and the twelve drives, all fed from the same redundant bus.

Eight PCIe slots and remote management

The chassis provides eight flexible PCIe slots: three full-height and five low-profile. This allows the addition of GPUs, extra network adapters or storage controllers without consuming extra rack units. iDRAC8 Express gives out-of-band remote access for firmware updates, power control and hardware monitoring. Each blade includes two 16 GB SD cards for hypervisor boot, leaving the SAS bays free for data volumes. The single CMC manages both blades through a single IP address.
