HP
2U rack server with one Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core 2.4 GHz CPU, 8 GB DDR4, two 1 TB SATA drives and redundant 500 W power supplies
The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 occupies 2U of rack space and ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. Eight gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory and two 1 TB 7.2K SATA drives sit behind a B140i software RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. Dual 500 W hot-swap power supplies provide redundancy. The Matrox G200eH2 GPU handles basic display output. No operating system is included.
Adding a second Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processor doubles the core count to a maximum of 36 and unlocks the remaining 12 DIMM slots for up to 3 TB of DDR4 memory at 2400 MT/s. Moving from the B140i SATA-only RAID to a hardware SAS controller enables 12 Gbps SAS drives and NVDIMM persistent memory for mission-critical workloads. The jump is worth it when virtualisation density or database throughput exceeds the single-socket, SATA-limited configuration.
Eight 2.5-inch SFF drive bays are populated with the two included drives; bay 3 accepts a universal media bay, bay 2 supports six NVME drives, and both bays 2 and 3 can each take an additional 8 SFF cage for 16 or 24 total bays. Twenty-four DIMM slots (12 per processor) allow granular memory growth with 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB DDR4 modules. Redundant hot-swap power supplies free the build from single-point power failure. Buyers who need GPU compute acceleration or fibre-channel connectivity will need a different platform.
