The 288-pin ECC registered design targets workstation and server platforms that require error correction and signal buffering. Standard desktop motherboards cannot use these modules.
The jump is worth it when your workload demands registered ECC memory and the board accepts 2Rx4 modules at 3200MHz. Mixing these with unbuffered DIMMs is not supported, so a full replacement is required.
