Dual 18-core Xeon Gold blade

The DELL PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for high-density data-centre racks. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors run at 3.0 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo, providing 36 physical cores and 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz ECC memory across eight slots. A PERC S140 controller manages two 1.92 TB SATA SSDs in RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10. The Broadcom 57810S-K card adds dual 10 Gb networking, while iDRAC9 Enterprise handles remote management.

Upgrade from single-socket or older blades

Replacing a single-processor blade or an earlier generation model adds a second CPU socket and doubles the core count to 36, lifting multi-thread throughput for virtualisation and HPC clusters. The jump is worthwhile when workloads need more simultaneous threads than a single 18-core chip can supply, or when memory must scale beyond 64 GB without moving to a full-height chassis. The S140 controller also brings NVMe support that older integrated controllers lack.

Suits dense virtualisation and scale-out clouds

This blade fits organisations running VMware, Hyper-V or container platforms that benefit from high core density and fast local storage in a shared MX or M1000e enclosure. Buyers who need GPU acceleration, Fibre Channel connectivity or more than two 2.5-inch drive bays should evaluate other form factors. The Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory is only suitable for basic console output, not graphical workloads.
