Dell PowerEdge R740 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with one Intel Gold 6148 processor running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores and 27.5 MB cache. It includes 128 GB of DDR4 memory in eight 16 GB modules operating at PC4-2666 speed. Two 7.68 TB SAS SSDs are installed and managed by an H730P RAID controller. The chassis provides eight 2.5 inch drive bays for additional storage expansion.

PCIe Gen 3 and 10GbE networking limits

The system offers up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots for add-in cards such as GPUs, additional NICs or storage controllers. Network connectivity is provided by an Intel X550 NDC with two 10 Gb RJ45 ports and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports. Bandwidth for each slot and port is defined by the PCIe Gen 3 and 10 GbE standards respectively. No optical drive bay is present in this configuration.

Check rack depth power and cooling before ordering

Verify that your rack can accommodate a 2U server with sufficient depth clearance for cabling and airflow. Confirm that your facility can supply redundant power to the 1100 W power supplies and that cooling capacity matches the heat output of a 20-core CPU and multiple drives. Ensure your management network can reach the iDRAC9 Enterprise port for remote administration. Buyers who need more than one processor or more than eight drive bays should consider a different chassis.
