Dual-socket 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. The system includes a PERC H730P 2 GB SAS/SATA storage controller and eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS 2.5-inch hard drives. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundant hot-swap power.

Sustained multi-threaded throughput

Under continuous load the two 24-core CPUs maintain a base frequency of 2.1 GHz and can reach a turbo frequency of 3.7 GHz when thermal headroom allows. The 12 Gb/s SAS interface on the H730P controller delivers consistent bandwidth to the eight 10K drives during prolonged read and write operations. Registered ECC DDR4 memory helps preserve data integrity across long compute jobs. Redundant power supplies keep the platform running if one unit fails.

Storage and memory expansion limits

The PERC H730P supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for the installed SAS drives. The server board provides 24 DDR4 slots with a maximum supported capacity of 3 TB. Only two processor sockets are available, both already populated with the Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs. The 2U chassis holds eight 2.5-inch drive bays, all occupied by the 2.4 TB disks.
