The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server equipped with four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors. Each CPU runs at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores and reaches 3.2 GHz turbo. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 48 slots.

Upgrade from dual-socket or lower-core platforms

Moving to four sockets adds 48 cores total and supports up to 6 TB of memory. The jump is worthwhile when workloads demand high thread counts, large in-memory datasets or licensing models that favour dense sockets. Single- or dual-socket systems cannot match this core density.
