Server identity and target workloads

The Dell PowerEdge T440 is a 5U tower server that can also be rack-mounted with a conversion kit. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors running at 2.1GHz with 3.0GHz turbo across 16 total cores. The system includes 256GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory in eight 32GB modules and a PERC H730P 2GB RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 1GbE networking and iDRAC 9 Express remote management are built in. Redundant 750W platinum power supplies provide hot-swap capability.

Upgrade path and when it matters

This configuration replaces older tower or 4U rack servers that max out at lower core counts, slower memory speeds or fewer drive bays. The jump is worth it when workloads need 16 hot-swap 2.5-inch bays for SAS, SATA or SSD storage and up to 1TB of DDR4 across 16 slots. Virtualization hosts running VMware ESXi, Hyper-V or Proxmox VE benefit from the dual-socket layout and hardware RAID with battery-backed cache. Database and software-defined storage deployments gain from the 12Gb/s controller and ECC memory integrity.

Installation notes and common pitfalls

The server arrives without front bezel or ready rails, so rack mounting requires a separate conversion kit and rail set. Only four 2.5-inch drive trays are included; the remaining 12 bays need additional trays before populating drives. Memory must be DDR4 ECC registered modules; consumer UDIMMs will not post. The PERC H730P battery should be checked on first boot as aged units can report a fault. iDRAC 9 Express uses a dedicated network port; sharing the primary NIC is not supported on this licence tier.
